Knocking noise from your suspension: is it safe to drive?

A rattle over cobbles, a thud in a pothole or a crunch pulling away on full lock — how to tell which part is knocking, which noises are not suspension at all, and when to call a recovery truck.

Suspension noise almost never starts overnight. First comes a light rattle over cobbles and expansion joints that most drivers blame on the road, then it turns into a dull thud that arrives more often. The gap between "it can wait until the weekend" and "stop driving it" depends on which part is making the sound and on when it appears: over potholes, in bends, pulling away on full lock, or under braking.

Rule out the things that are not suspension

Start with the wheel bolts, especially if the noise appeared soon after a tyre change or after a wheel came off for any reason: a loose wheel makes a steady light rattle that gets worse over bumps, and a wheel brace settles the question in thirty seconds. Tighten them crosswise rather than around the circle, and if a bolt spins in its seat, the holes in the wheel are wallowed out or a thread has stretched, retightening solves nothing — that car should not be driven. Then open the boot — a loose jack, brace or spare wheel rattles exactly like worn suspension. The third classic decoy is a broken exhaust hanger: the pipe taps the body over bumps and the noise seems to come from the front. Only inspect the exhaust once it has cooled and only with the car on level ground, and never go underneath a car held up by a jack alone, without axle stands.

Telling the parts apart by sound

  • A light, dry rattle over cobbles, patched tarmac and expansion joints, mostly below 40 km/h and in bends — usually the anti-roll bar links (drop links), by far the most common source of suspension noise. Brake pads moving in the caliper carrier make exactly the same rattle when the anti-rattle shims or springs are missing. The two are hard to tell apart by ear, but there is a free test: go over the same bump while lightly holding the brake. The pad rattle disappears; the drop link rattle stays.
  • A single dull thud when you drop into a big pothole, after which the car settles immediately — usually a broken bump stop or a failed top mount rather than the damper itself. A worn damper fails differently: the body keeps bouncing after a bump, small ripples bring on a rattle, and the nose dives harder under braking. Oil on the strut body is not the deciding factor: modern gas dampers often lose their damping bone dry, and light misting on the rod is not on its own a reason to replace them.
  • A click, creak or notchy feel as you turn the wheel while parked, with the noise coming from the top of the wing — the front strut top mount bearing. A repeated crunch as you pull away or accelerate on full lock is a completely different part: the outer CV joint on the driveshaft. These two get mixed up more than anything else, and the repairs have nothing in common.
  • A dull knock from one side over bumps, sometimes a creak on full lock — a ball joint. Rocking the body tells you nothing about it: the play is found by moving the raised wheel at twelve and six o'clock, or with a pry bar. If nothing shows up with the wheel in the air, that does not clear the joint — the final word comes from a play detector, with the wheel still loaded. Once you can feel play and a click, the car should not be driven.
  • The same dull knock from one side, but with a hum that rises with speed and changes as you change lanes — a worn wheel bearing. It is checked with the same twelve-and-six rocking motion as a ball joint, which is exactly why the two get confused.
  • A soft, dull knock, the car wanders on a straight road, vague steering, uneven tyre wear — worn control arm bushes. They cannot be judged at all with the wheel hanging free: they are checked with a pry bar while the arm is loaded.
  • A dull thud from one side with that corner sitting visibly lower, sometimes a grinding noise as you turn the wheel — a broken coil spring. Salted winters and broken road surfaces usually snap the bottom coil, and the broken end can lean on the tyre and cut through the sidewall, which puts it right alongside a ball joint for seriousness.
  • A knock you feel through the steering wheel rather than through the body — track rod ends, the steering rack, or the universal joint in the steering column. The column joint gives a dry click as you make small inputs while stationary and is almost inaudible from outside, so it usually gets blamed on the track rod ends.

When it stops being safe

Nothing on that list is harmless. Worn drop links and top mount bearings will still get you to a garage: you lose body control in corners and comfort, but the car steers. A link that has actually broken, though, hangs loose and can cut a brake hose, tear a CV boot or strike the rim and tyre, and on a tall crossover the complete loss of anti-roll bar connection noticeably changes how the car behaves in an emergency swerve. A collapsed MacPherson top mount is its own problem: the rod pushes through the mount and the strut loses its upper mounting point. Ball joints, broken springs and bushes are the genuinely dangerous ones — when a ball joint lets go, the wheel folds under the arch while you are moving, usually in a bend or over a pothole, and worn bushes shift the geometry under load, so the car behaves one way in gentle driving and another under hard braking.

The rest of the list sorts by urgency like this. Play in a track rod end or the steering rack is a loss of steering rather than of comfort, which puts a track rod end alongside a ball joint: with noticeable play the car should not be driven. A steering column universal joint with obvious play is just as critical, because it is the only link between the wheel in your hands and the rack. A wheel bearing leaves some margin: a moderate hum will still get you to a garage, but a hum audible at any speed, play at the wheel or a hub that runs hot means stopping, because a bearing can seize. A crunching CV joint will run a while longer, though the crunch means the boot tore long ago and grit is inside, and a joint that finally breaks leaves the car with no drive, so it is not one to postpone. Brake pads moving in the caliper carrier barely affect braking and are not dangerous in themselves, but book them in with everything else: a seized guide pin usually sits next to them, and that does mean uneven pad wear and a pull under braking.

Do not put it off if the knock got clearly louder over the past few days, if a crunch has appeared, if the car wanders on a straight road, or if the steering has gone vague. And if you can feel play and a click in a ball joint, or one corner is sitting low, do not drive it at all — call a recovery truck. A ball joint does not fail because of speed but because of load over a pothole or in a bend, so crawling through town saves nothing. Vibration that shows up only under braking is a separate matter: it is nearly always warped brake discs rather than suspension, and it points at the suspension only when a knock and a pull come with it.

The bounce test everyone recommends only tells you about the dampers: press down on each corner and let go — the car should come back and stop in one movement. It finds neither ball joints nor bushes nor drop links. On a ramp a ball joint is checked by rocking the wheel, but with the wheel in the air the play often refuses to show: it is masked by the weight of the hub assembly hanging on the joint and by the joint's own preload. On a MacPherson strut the lower ball joint is also largely unloaded, since the spring works through the strut; on layouts with the spring on the lower arm the joint stays loaded, and the difference between a hanging wheel and a loaded one is greater still. That is why a play detector is used, with the wheel still loaded on moving plates — and that is also why a quick look sometimes "finds nothing". Book a suspension inspection and describe when the noise appears — speed, bends, braking, pulling away on full lock; that is half the diagnosis. It is also worth doing before the tehnički pregled, the annual roadworthiness test in Serbia: play in a ball joint, track rod end or bush is a standard reason to be sent away. Links, ball joints and bushes have no mileage-based replacement interval — they are changed on condition, so the sensible habit is a look at the suspension on a ramp at every service.
