The 15,000 km figure is only the top line of your service book. Almost every manufacturer prints two schedules — normal service and severe service — and the severe one covers city traffic, short trips, dust, towing and taxi work, usually at half the interval. So the question is not whether the factory is being naive; it already spelled all this out. The question is which of the two schedules your driving actually falls under.
Oil counts running hours, not kilometres
Heat, revs and engine running hours wear oil out — not the numbers on the odometer. Half an hour in traffic is half an hour of full engine work for two or three kilometres on the clock. Most cars will show running hours in the service menu or through an OBD scanner, and for city use that is a far more honest counter than mileage. For short urban trips, 200–250 running hours is the marker to work with, and on the calendar that adds up to roughly six months. In kilometres, city driving puts it at about 5,000–7,000 km rather than 10,000: for 200 running hours to cover 10,000 km the average speed has to be 50 km/h, which is motorway work — and the severe schedule is not written for that.
- Short trips. Coolant reaches operating temperature in 5–10 minutes, but the oil needs 20–30, and longer in winter. A fifteen-minute drive therefore does not count as a warm one: condensed moisture and unburnt fuel stay in the oil. A home–office–shop routine in winter burns through the interval fastest.
- Traffic and heat. The air conditioning is barely a factor — its compressor draws one to two kilowatts, which is nothing to an engine. The real issue is that at idle there is almost no airflow through the radiator, the oil heats up, and the pump moves it through the engine at its lowest flow rate. The hours accumulate, the kilometres do not.
- Dust, load and diesels with a DPF. Gravel tracks, towing and driving fully loaded shorten the interval on their own. Fuel dilution affects only some diesels: it happens where regeneration uses late in-cylinder injection, while systems with a separate fifth injector in the exhaust (some PSA, Ford and Volvo engines) avoid it entirely. And the main culprit is not regeneration itself but interrupted regeneration — switching the engine off halfway through the cycle, ten times in a row.
LongLife, CBS and ASSYST: when the car sets the interval
Cars from the early 2000s onwards often count cold starts, running hours, oil temperature and fuel consumption instead of kilometres. VW Group calls it LongLife (up to 30,000 km or two years), BMW uses Condition Based Service, Mercedes ASSYST. For those cars the 15,000 km line simply is not their number. One practical point that rarely gets mentioned: if you decide to change at 7,000–10,000 km, the car has to be switched from LongLife to a fixed service interval (on VAG models that is a coding change), otherwise the dashboard keeps counting down to 30,000. The required oil approval changes with it — on VAG petrol engines from 504 00 to 502 00 — while on diesels with a DPF the low-ash 507 00 approval stays mandatory whatever the interval.
The calendar matters too, but not for the reason usually given. With the engine switched off nothing is burning, and oxidation at room temperature all but stops. Parked oil ages differently: temperature swings leave condensed moisture in the sump, and the acids already accumulated on earlier trips keep working — the total base number (TBN) falls, which means corrosion on the crankshaft bearing shells and rust on the camshafts. That is why we treat one year as a sensible ceiling on a fixed interval in normal use, and half that — six months — under severe conditions: city traffic, short trips, taxi work. The factory calendar limit for LongLife schedules is two years. The date of the last change matters more than the odometer, so write it down or ask for a sticker.
What you fill it with matters as much as when
The oil approval for your specific engine matters more than a couple of thousand kilometres either way. A diesel with a DPF needs a low-ash oil — an ACEA C-series grade (C2/C3 are mid-SAPS; the true low-SAPS grades are C1/C4), VW 507 00, MB 229.51/229.52, BMW LL-04 — because a high-ash oil will clog the filter faster than any overdue interval ever could. Modern turbocharged direct-injection petrol engines need protection against low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI), which means API SP or ILSAC GF-6. And the viscosity — 0W-20, 5W-30, 5W-40 — is exactly what the manual specifies: it is matched to that engine's clearances and oil galleries, not chosen on the 'go thicker so it burns less' logic.
When you need diagnostics, not an oil change
- A rattle for the first few seconds from cold. It is not about the oil film — cold oil is the thickest it ever gets. That sound is delayed oil pressure: drained hydraulic lifters, a timing chain tensioner that lost pressure overnight, or a VVT phaser rattling. Oil plays only an indirect part here — wrong viscosity, a clogged pickup screen, fuel in the oil. Changing the oil instead of investigating is risky: the same noise can mean a stretched timing chain, and that is timing gear work, not a routine service.
- The level drops and you keep topping up. Oil consumption on its own is not a diagnosis: VW, BMW and Mercedes allow up to 0.5 l per 1,000 km as standard, and some engines up to a litre. The cause is investigated separately — valve stem seals, piston rings, turbo, crank seals — and fresh oil does not cure it. Incidentally, regular topping up partly refreshes the additive package by itself, so consumption alone never means 'time for a change'.
- The level RISES above MAX, the dipstick smells of fuel, and the oil feels as thin as water. On a diesel this is the most dangerous state of all: fuel-diluted oil can reach the intake and the engine starts running away on its own oil — at that point it can only be stopped by blocking the intake, and it usually ends in an engine replacement. Do not put this off: keep the revs down, and better still, do not drive it at all — call a tow truck.
What to do now: find the date and mileage of your last change. Check the level on a warm engine — switch it off, give the oil 5–10 minutes to drain back, and park on level ground; a cold reading sits too high. Some newer cars have no dipstick at all (BMW from roughly 2010, many Mercedes models, certain VAG and Renault cars) — there the level is read electronically from the menu, also warm and after standing. If it has been more than a year, or your driving is mostly short city runs, plan the oil and filter change around every 6 months or 200–250 running hours rather than waiting for the factory 15,000. And if the level is falling, rising or smelling of fuel, book diagnostics first — fresh oil will not fix the cause.
